PROSTHODONTICS

Prosthodontics - The Specialty Defined

Prosthodontics is one of only nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA) and is the only specialty dedicated to esthetic, reconstructive, and implant dentistry. In fact, out of approximately 150,000 dentists nationwide, only 4000, just 2%, are Prosthodontists.

Upon completion of their general dentistry training and receiving their DDS/DMD degree, Prosthodontists receive an extra three years of additional advanced specialty training in an ADA accredited post-graduate program. In addition to an extensive clinical education, this training features an in-depth study of dental materials and related sciences, hands-on experience with all laboratory procedures, and collaboration with other dental specialists and medical colleagues.

The scope of experience and formal education distinguishes the Prosthodontist as the authority in the creation of restorations that fit precisely, function optimally, and are biologically compatible.

The Crossroads of Art & Science

Prosthodontics has taken dentistry far beyond infection control and pain relief. Your teeth and mouth do far more than just chew food! With the combination of Prosthodontic skills, and state-of-the-art technology and materials, we are able to offer more solutions than ever before to meet the diverse needs and esthetic desires of our patients. The “one size fits all” approach is no longer appropriate. Prosthodontists learn and understand how color, light influence, surface texture, and materials each play their part in creating a natural looking tooth replacement. The Prosthodontist can masterfully introduce the beauty of a natural looking tooth with the functionality of a finely crafted restoration.I n addition to their knowledge of biomaterials, occlusion, and function, they are the experts in dental esthetics.

The Role of the Prosthodontist

The Prosthodontist is considered the “architect” for the dental planning process. While many general dentists can provide many of the basics in restorative dental care, there are cases where the expertise of a specialist can mean the difference between a successful result and an exceptional result.

Prosthodontists are trained to manage the most complex dental restorations. These skills benefit patients with less involved dental needs. From a routine cleaning or simple filling, to the most complex multidisciplinary dental reconstruction, each patients issues are addressed with the highest level of precision and accuracy.
